During and After
3rd September 1939, Britain declare war on Germany. An announcement was made that Britain have joined Australia, France, and New Zealand to declare war on Germany after Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. This was no joke, the very next day The Royal Navy went flying out to attack Germany’s navy. As this attack is going through The United States Of America announce they will not be joining Britain and co. in this life changing war. Around five days later Americas neighbours Canada have joined the war…..
4 months later 8th January 1940 the war is still going on and it keeps on getting worse. Britain start rationing which in this case is a fixed amount of food. 3 months after Britain start rationing Germany got stronger.. they invaded Denmark and Norway. This is showing Germany’s dominance in the war so far.. To make it worse for Britain and its allies Germany invaded France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. To make it worse Netherlands and Belgium had to surrender to Germany, to make them closer and closer to Britain.
Dunkirk, the battle of Dunkirk was a massive battle between Germany and Britain and Britain’s allies. The battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe from 26 May to 4 June 1940. The outcome of the battle of Dunkirk was 350,000 British, French and Belgian troops from Dunkirk which was a massive morale boosting win for them. This helped them massively in the war as they managed to get over a quarter of a million troops out of Dunkirk where most of them would have died.
August 1940 Adolf Hitler and his troops started air raids on London, straight after this Britain responded with an air raid of there own on Berlin. This started what people now call the “Blitz”. It was September 1940. London was the key target. The onslaught on other major cities in England including Cardiff, Liverpool and Manchester. The Blitz started as a plan to invade England. On the first of the Blitz 430 people got killed and 1600 were badly injured, and that was just the first day of it. After a few weeks Germany weren’t bombing just once a day it was in the morning and in the night. Hitler done this to push up the “fear factor”.
A year on and the bombs were still dropping down but just not as much,Germany started to drop bombs less frequently because Hitler turned his attention to Russia. The result of the Blitz was astonishing, Over 60,000 people were killed, over 87,000 were severely injured and over 2 million homes were destroyed. So even though Hitler didn’t manage to get England he crushed it into pieces. Which he would not care about.
USA declared war on the Axis power, so then Germany and Italy declared war on USA, while this was going on Britain gave up Hong Kong to Japan. USA were a powerful force with a lot of money, so Germany and especially Italy declaring war on USA was a bad idea by Adolf Hitler, the evil genius.
September 8 1943 Italy surrendered to their allies, they were looking strong but since they declared war on USA it all went downhill for them and their other allies. A month later in October allies entered Naples, Italy so Italy reacted by declaring war on Germany who they previously were allied with. Which shows that the evil genius Adolf Hitler wasn’t happy with Italy surrendering to allies.
Fast forward 2 years July 1945 Germany surrendered to the Red Army in Berlin. This was because couple months earlier the person that started it all Adolf Hitler commit suicide. Even though Germany gave up USA were still at it they dropped the very first atomic bomb in Hiroshima which killed a whooping 80,000 people. They weren’t finished there either as they dropped another atomic bomb on which killed 70,000. So it was a bad idea for Japan, Germany and Italy to even go close USA. After the two atomic bombs got dropped Japan officially surrendered at the end of WW2. September 2 1945 WW2 is officially over.
So after 6 years of fighting and shootings and bombings what did they gain out of it all. In the end WW2 had the most deaths compare to any other with over 50 million people dying. Also the man that started it all Adolf Hitler, what did he gain… nothing in the end he got scared that Britain will kill him so he took the cowards way out and killed himself. He in the end caused over 50 million people to die and in the end he didn’t even get what he wanted he just shot himself.
The aftermath of WW2 was incredible all shops and homes broken in a lot of countries even Germany who from the start weren’t even meant to be touched according to Hitler who thought he and they were invincible.
Flag- Analysis
The structure of the poem is very well done, it has three lines per stanza. The structure is like this as the poem shows patriotism. Also each stanza has a question and an answer, their are two people speaking in this poem, one that is asking the questions and the other one is answering the questions. In the start of each stanza it has a verb, the verbs are: fluttering, unfurling, rising, flying. This shows the reader the movement of the flag from the first stanza. The movement of the flag shows that it is getting more significant each stanza, this shows me that the flag is growing in power as the poem goes by. John Agard repeating the phrase “its just a piece of cloth” shows me that a piece of cloth is more significant than an actual flag. Each stanza ends that gives an image to the readers of patriotism.
Belfast Confetti- Analysis
The poem Belfast Confetti describes the fighting going on between protesters and police in Northern Ireland, i know it is in Northern Ireland as Belfast is in Northern Ireland. The poem starts with the word “suddenly” i think it is a good way to start a poem like this as by using the word suddenly it tells the reader that something is about to happen. The word suddenly is also telling the reader that the poem is starting in the middle of something, as the poem starts by saying “Suddenly as the riot squad moves in” this must show something big has happened before for the riot squad to be moving in as the first line of the poem, this might confuse the reader as they wouldn’t know what is going on but it will make the reader want to read on and want to know what has happened. Going on to the stanzas, the stanzas are structured in weird ways as a long stanza is followed up by a short one and sometimes the stanza is only one word. The word confetti might confuse the reader as confetti is normally used at parties etc. but here in the confetti it has nuts, bolts, nails, car-keys and the protesters might be throwing it as the police to make the confetti. Confetti goes up then comes back down and so do bombs and in Northern Ireland they used to use bombs so i think that bombs were used in this piece of conflict.
