At the start of chapter 22 (page 234) no one thought that Atticus could do it but further on in the chapter (page 238) Miss Maudie says “I thought, Atticus Finch won’t win, he can’t win, but he’s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that. And I thought to myself, well, we’re making a step -it’s just a baby-step, but it’s a step.” This shows there has been progress as it actually comes into a persons head that Atticus could do it. I think that Maycomb county especially the White community were scared that Atticus might just do it as the jury is taking so long. Also on page 238 it says “Did it ever strike you that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy was no accident? That Judge Taylor might have had his reasons for naming him?” Harper Lee writing this suggests that even Judge Taylor thought this was a bit wrong and wanted it to be a fair jury. On page 239 Bob Ewell stopped in front of Atticus and spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life. This shows Bob Ewell was adamant that Tom Robinson raped his daughter Mayella Ewell when he knows himself that Tom Robinson didn’t rape Mayella and Mayella went on to Tom but failed so he wants Tom in prison for in the end no reason at all or maybe his daughter told him otherwise but he knows she is lying.
